Viktor Mayer-Schönberger is Associate Professor of Public Policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government / Harvard University.

He has published seven books and is the author of over eighty articles and book chapters on the legal and political aspects of modern information & communication technologies. After successes in the International Physics Olympics and the Austrian Young Programmers Contest, Dr.Mayer-Schönberger studied law in Salzburg (Mag.iur, '88, Dr.iur '91), Cambridge (UK) and Harvard (LL.M. '89). In 1992 he received a M.Sc. (Econ) from the London School of Economics, and in 2001 the venia docendi on (among others) information law.

In 1986 he founded Ikarus Software, a company focusing on data security and developed the Virus Utilities, which became the best-selling Austrian software product. The recipient of numerous awards for innovation and entrepreneurship, he was voted Top-5 Software Entrepreneur in Austria in 1991 and Person of the Year for the State of Salzburg in 2000.

Together with Lewis Branscomb, he chairs the Rueschlikon Conference on Information Policy in the New Economy, which annually brings together leading strategists and decision-makers of the new economy. He also chairs the faculty group on information technology policy, and the Governance of Information seminar series. He is the cofounder of the SubTech conference and from 2003-2006 served on the ABA/AALS National Conference of Lawyers and Scientists. He is on the editorial board of "Information Technology for Development" and on the advisory board among others of the Research Center on Information Law, and Evolaris, the ecommerce competence center.

In his spare time, he likes to travel, go to the movies, and learn about architecture.
